THE YAK
It was almost something else entirely.
You can still see it in the horns — the way they curl out from the backrest like something interrupted mid-thought. In the hide that hasn't fully settled. In the shadow it throws when the light hits it at the wrong angle, or maybe the right one.
Something came through from the old world and got as far as this room. An old spirit needed somewhere to be. It chose well.
This is not a chair that asks permission. It doesn't arrange itself around the room. The room arranges itself around it. Quietly. Without discussion.
The timber is Australian reclaimed blue gum and mountain ash — wood that was already old when it came to the studio. Charred by hand using the Japanese technique of shou sugi ban. Oiled. Left alone to become what it was always going to be. The seat and backrest are pure Merino wool hide — raw, warm, faintly animal. The kind of material that makes a room smell like somewhere real.
There is one. There will not be another.
The Yak doesn't belong in a showroom. It belongs at the end of a long hallway, in the corner of a room you haven't built yet, in a space that understands that the most extraordinary things are the ones that look like they arrived on their own terms.
Because this one did.
